TROUBLESHOOTING
General System Issues
Optimizing Gameplay on Slower Computers
If you are experiencing slowdown, try turning the detail levels for all graphical options down to the minimum, and then adjusting them one by one until you achieve an acceptable balance between visual quality and game performance. Note that turning down shader quality and tree density (in that order) has the greatest impact on the game's performance, so these options are a good place to start when tuning the visuals.

NOTE: The "High" shader setting is for top-of-the-line cards only, such as the ATI X1800 or the GeForce 7900.
Video Issues
General Video Troubleshooting
Outdated or incorrect video drivers are the cause of the majority of video issues. Before contacting support, ensure you have the latest production (release) drivers for your video card.

    * ATI Technologies
    * Intel
    * Matrox
    * NVIDIA
    * S3 Graphics
    * SiS

Specific Video Card Troubleshooting
Card       Issues / Workarounds
Nvidia Cards       Issues: The edges of tracks and other in-game objects flicker.

Solution: Turn anti-aliasing to "None" on the options screen, then return your settings to their previous levels.
I get a message that says "Unable to initialize DirectX" when I try to launch the game.
Possible solutions to this problem include:

   1. Make sure you have DirectX 9.0c or greater and that it is working properly.
   2. Make sure you have the latest video drivers for your video card.

Networking Issues
Railroads! uses the GameSpy networking system, which utilizes NAT (Network Address Translation) negotiation technology to manage networking ports and traffic automatically. The majority of users will never need to modify the port settings of their router. However, if you encounter issues trying to join or host multiplayer games, you may need to open one or more of the following ports:

UDP port 2056       Game-specific traffic
UDP ports 2056-2156       Alternate game traffic ports (if primary port is in use)
UDP port 6500       lobby server queries
UDP port 13139       lobby ping time calculation
TCP port 6667       lobby chat traffic
TCP 28910       lobby server game data queries
MANUAL ERRATA AND ADDENDUM
Manual Errata
Voice Over IP:
Sid Meier's Railroads! includes voice-over-IP technology. All that's needed is a functioning microphone. While playing a multiplayer game, simply press the "/" key while speaking. Playback and capture volume can be adjusted on the "Options" screen. Note that no additional open ports or network configuration are needed to use VoIP in Railroads!
Goods and Trains Quick Bar:
Directly above the minimap is a tab that allows the player to access a quick list of all their trains, listed by their time of creation, and a list of the in-game goods, listed by price. Clicking on a train name will bring up that train's status panel. Double-clicking will center the camera over that train. By hovering the mouse over any of the goods' names, you can see where they are produced on the minimap. To close the quick bar, simply click on the trains or goods icon again.
MiniMap Utilities:
Four buttons line the left edge of the minimap. These buttons are:

    * Reset Camera Position [SCROLL LOCK]- Return the camera to your starting station.
    * View Event Log [Q]- Displays all past alerts and contains a filter to search by type.
    * Go To City [CTRL+G] - Centers the camera on the city selected out of the pull down list.
    * Chat [ENTER] - Allows player to chat with other players. AI tends to be less talkative.

Speed Records:
When any train in the game sets a new speed record, it gets a unique name (you may rename it by selecting the train and clicking the "rename" icon in the panel at the bottom of the screen), and henceforth earns a 10% bonus to passenger revenue.
Game Speed:
The pace of play can be adjusted using the "Game Speed" button to the right of your cash display. Clicking this button once will double the pace at which the game plays. Clicking it again will slow the speed of the game to one-half. One more click and you are back to normal speed. Directly next to the "Game Speed" button is the "Pause" button, which when pressed, pauses any single-player game.
Hide Cities/Clutter/Trees:
By holding the [SPACE BAR], all city buildings, clutter and trees can be temporarily hidden from view in order facilitate track laying or simply get a better look at the terrain.
Deleting Track:
The key to deleting track is to make sure that no train is currently on the track and that no train uses the track for any of its routes. If any train uses a piece of track for its route, whether it is currently on that track or not, that piece of track cannot be deleted. When deleting track, you recieve the full cost of the track back, but not the cost of changing the landscape. When you sell the track in front of a depot, it also sells the depot.
Priority Trains:
If two trains of the same priority reach a station, the game will allow the train with full cars to go before the train with empty cars and will allow passenger and mail trains to go before freight trains. Otherwise, priority trains function as described in the manual.
Train Recycling:
As mentioned below in "train costs", all train costs were doubled. However, you will now receive "trade in value" for the train you're upgrading. This value depends on the age of the train you're trading in, and the difficulty level you're playing on.
Train Re-Routing:
If you've built a new route, but don't have enough cash reserves to buy an engine, or wish to switch a train to a significantly different route, you can. Enter the routing screen, delete the train's old route and set out the new route you wish to lay, whether it's connected to the old route or not. If the route is not easily accessible (the train must jump to another unconnected track, etc.) the game will bring up a "Shipping Fee" window. The fee depends on the difficulty level.
Liquidation:
When you buy out a railroad in single-player, you will be given the option to liquidate your shares or merge the line with your existing railway. If you liquidate a company's assets, you will receive cash based on the cost of their trains, track and depots. If you choose to merge, you can then use their track, depots and trains just as you would if you had built them yourself. Whether you merge or liquidate, you get to keep all the industries that company owned. You cannot liquidate in multiplayer games.
Terminals:
You can upgrade your depots by clicking on the city to which they are attached and clicking the "Upgrade" button on the left of the selection panel. Terminals now increase car load/unload speeds by 100%, rather than only 50%, as it states in the manual.
Patent Effects:
Two patents have had their effects adjusted: Baldwin's Sandbox and the Westinghouse Airbrake. The Baldwin's Sandbox now only increases the speed of trains traveling uphill by 25%, rather than 50%. The Westinghouse Airbrake increases the speed of trains heading around turns by 25%, rather than 50%. These numbers supercede all other text.
Starting Stock:
The manual states that every player begins play with ownership of four shares in their own company. This is incorrect. Every player begins with five on "Tycoon" and "Mogul" difficulties. Only on "Investor" and "Financier" does the player receive four shares.
Monopoly and Goals Victory:
In the manual, it says that the player has the option of disabling the "Scenario Goals" or "Monopoly" victory conditions. This is incorrect. "Scenario Goals" and "Monopoly" victories are always enabled.
Retirement:
When the end date you have selected finally arrives, the game will ask you if you'd like to retire or continue playing. If you choose to continue playing, the game continues for another 100 years before you are finally retired for good.

Score
Sick of ending the game as a lowly Snake Oil Peddler? Ready to move up to the Oval Office? Below is a description of what each part of your score means and how to make it higher.

Score Type
Net Worth Score       Calculated from your net worth and the time period. A $7 million dollar net worth will earn you more points in 1865 than 1965.
Objective Score       You recieve 2 points per objective completed, two for completing all the objectives in an era and five for completing all the objectives in all the eras.
Prestige Score       Any time your company gains some fame, you earn prestige points. Every speed record shattered, patent purchased, industry owned, business bought-out and special delivery sent earns more prestige points.
Train Updates
Below are the latest updates to the game's most important elements, the trains.

Train Costs
In order to aid gameplay, the costs of all the trains have been doubled from what was stated in the manual. The prices below reflect this change.
Train Name       Location       Purchase Cost       Top Speed       Maintenance Costs
EMD F-Series       United States       $130,000       80mph       $4500
4-8-4 Golden State       United States       $160,000       90mph       $4500
EMD GP-Series       United States       $180,000       120mph       $5000
Upgrading and Selling Your Fleet
When upgrading a train, you recieve compensation equal to the train you are replacing, minus a certain percentage due ot the age of the train. So if you are ready to ditch that old Golden State for a new EMD GP, you'll get back a portion of your $160,000. When selling trains (by clicking the "Scrap" button), you get back one-half of the purchase price.
Class 40 1-Co-Co-1
This train can now be purchased as early as 1952.
The TGV
The TGV cannot pull any cargo save passengers and mail. It is also not possible to upgrade any train to a TGV if it is carrying anything other than mail or passengers.
4-8-4 242 A1
The French 242 A1 has been removed from the game.

Freight
Different types of goods require various amounts of strength to pull them efficiently. Thus, all goods in the game, save passengers and mail, have been divided up into freight categories. A train's ability to haul each of these different types of freight can be seen on the graph in the "Roundhouse."

    * Fast Freight - Wine, Food, Grapes and Beer
    * Freight - Livestock, Manufactured Goods, Grain, Cornmeal, Paper, Wood, Ore, Medicine, Textiles, Arms and Automobiles
    * Bulk Freight - Steel, Oil, Coal, Gold, Nitrates, Wool, Milk, Swine and Fish

Railroads! saved games have the extension ".SMRailroadsSavedGame". You may copy or delete these files as you would any other files.

Double-clicking a saved game will launch the game and load that saved game.
Logitechฎ G15 Gaming Keyboard
Sid Meier's Railroads! supports the Logitechฎ G15 Gaming Keyboard. Using the G15's LCD info display, players can view game information like net worth and game events on the LCD. Use the first two "soft keys" to switch displays between the net worth display and the event log. Note: the latest Logitechฎ G15 drivers and software is required. Please visit http://www.logitech.com to ensure you have the latest software update for the keyboard.
Custom User Content
Railroads! supports user-created train logos. To add your own train logo to the game, follow these steps:

   1. Train logos must be saved in DirectDraw Surface (DDS) format. You may need special programs or plugins to create DDS files. The following links may be useful:
          * NVidia Texture Tools page
          * Any Image (Batch Image Converter)
          * DDS Converter (Image conversion utility)
   2. Train logos must be named with the filename pattern "train_decal_x.dds", where "x" is a number greater than 20. Note that user logos must be consecutively numbered; the game will abort looking for additional logos once it finds a number that does not exist.
   3. Custom logos must be placed in a special "Custom" directory before they will show up in the game. To find the Custom directory, navigate to "My Documents," "My Games," "Sid Meier's Railroads!." If the Custom folder does not exist, you may need to create it. Once you see the Custom folder, place all properly-named and saved custom flags and emblems inside it.
   4. Logos can be applied to any train by selecting a train and then clicking the "customize train" button on the panel at the bottom of the screen.
